Abstract

This study aims to describe and analyze the forms and functions of code-mixing in the lyrics of the song "Song of Sabdatama" by Jogja Hip Hop Foundation based on Pieter Muysken's code-mixing theory. The approach used is qualitative with descriptive methods. The research data are song lyrics containing elements of Javanese, Indonesian, and English code-mixing. The data collection technique was carried out using the listening and note-taking method, while the data analysis used the Miles & Huberman interactive model which includes data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results of the study indicate that there are three forms of code-mixing, namely insertion, alternation, and congruent lexicalization. Alternation is used for complete language shifts between clauses or sentences that function to expand meaning and present a global nuance. Insertion functions as the insertion of other language elements into the main structure to maintain and strengthen Javanese cultural values ​​that are philosophical and spiritual. Meanwhile, congruent lexicalization shows a more fluid blending of Javanese and Indonesian language structures as a form of linguistic hybridization in a bilingual society. Of all the data analyzed, the most dominant form of code-mixing is alternation. Code mixing in song lyrics not only functions as language variation, but also as a means of representing glocal identity, musical aesthetic expression, and a medium for social criticism. Code mixing also has an important role in building cultural and social meaning in popular music works based on local culture.
